i've mined 5 iron veins without seeing one.

definitely too low indeed, mined about 10 iron nodes and got NO heavy stones .. used to be more heavy stones than iron ore..

You have 25% chance to drop between 1-3 Heavy stone, which sum up to a 50% drop rate of heavy stone per mining tick.
Blizzlike value are beetwen 40-50% in average regarding data.
