Warriors(IN pvp) want Slower weapons due to their habilities reliying on weapon damage (the slower the higher END dmg), nothing to do with normalisation or the dps of the weapon sir.

face meet palm...

Before normalization occurred in patch 1.8, the damage of instant attacks included the weapon speed as a factor to attack power, thus greatly benefitting slow weapons with high swing times. Because of this, slow weapons with lower weapon dps could lead to a higher total damage per second than fast weapons with nominal higher weapon dps, which is counter-intuitive.

The normalized weapon damage for instant attacks is:

normalized_damage = base_weapon_damage + (X * Attack Power / 14)
where X is:

1.7 for daggers
2.4 for other one-handed weapons
3.3 for two-handed weapons
2.8 for ranged weapons
weapon speed for non-normalized attacks (see below)
Prior to patch 1.8, the weapon damage used for instant attacks was:

damage = base_weapon_damage + (weapon_speed * Attack Power / 14)
Note that ...

base_weapon_damage + weapon_speed * Attack Power / 14
is simply the formula for weapon (white) hit damage, as 14 AP = 1 DPS. The nomalized formula treats your weapon as if its swing time was a certain normal value for its type (1.7 sec for daggers, 3.3 sec for two-handed weapons, etc).

Nearly all instant attacks based upon weapon damage are affected by normalization; only a few are not.

Examples of normalized instant attacks
Warrior:
- Overpower
- Mortal Strike
- Whirlwind

Since I play both a Paladin with a Hand of Rag and a War with a Destroyer of Worlds(plz Nost devs, let a BRE or Ash drop for me ty) I have a unique insight on this, I think.

Sword Spec is too godlike to ever consider using anything else, the end. Vanilla WoW Mace spec leaves a lot to be desired and although the weapon dmg is super high, it simply isn't worth the cost of crafting it when you can get a similar damage range weapon(Ashkandi) or a weapon with an insanely broken proc(BRE) and save yourself 10 000 gold and live that Sword Spec 1 shotting lifestyle.

Yes Theloras, what you posted is correct, however this is not the point vathdar was making.

He was alluding to the fact that given two weapons with identical DPS, you still go for the slowest weapon possible because your special attacks (mortal strike, heroic strike) will do more damage despite being subject to attack power normalisation. The difference between faster and slower weapons was just much more significant before patch 1.8.

Despite all of this, any self respecting arms warrior would never use a mace over a sword in PvP during vanilla.

Sword spec proc > than damage from Hand of Rag proc.

This has nothing to.do with speed as war and pal both use slower weapons, so that agruement is mute.

Pally/Shammy would only teplace with MoM, warrior was many upgrades due to sword spec.

Thank you for replies.

Complementary question, how would the Axe spec compare to Sulfuras?
It's crystal clear that the sword 2nd swing trumps the fireball. Would the increased crit chance with an axe also be better than Sulfuras, or would it be the opposite in this case?

In other words, is sword spec > axe spec > Sulfuras; or is it sword spec > Sulfuras > axe spec?

This would come down to what is proc rate of Hand vs how much extra damage does a crit give your abilities on average, + what amount of extra rage would 5% more white hit crits give - compating your damage per rahe average.

So this will flip depending on your gear. Low AP Rag would be better as the crit damage increase average + increased damage per dame from 5% more white hit rage regen would not match the proc.

There is a threshold for AP that more crit would be better, but I am not breaking that down.

Mace stun is actually pretty good when you're alone or in small battles. It's just more of a defensive proc.

Eye should go to whoever has put the most time into the game/guild and has the gold ready for the mats. Also someone who will actually use it and not raid log. I don't think it really matters who it's "best" for.
( besides Druid lol)

In our guilds case we had two of our biggest pvpers /roll.
