w3 vs wow, graphic style

on this image are w3 unit portraits next to wow character faces
personaly i think warcraft 3 units have such display of character that wow never did/will have
do you think it s a shame that wow didnt take warcraft 3 approach? what you think, nows your chance to speak

WC3 also had superior models/design

the trolls in WoW looked like shit, where in WC3 they looked badass (look at alpha female troll for giggles) and the hunchback orcs didn't reflect they are a proud and strong race.

I agree. I played an orc for 10+ years but now I can't stand to play anything but human because the other races look so dumb. Night elves aren't bad but their proportions are wrong and the animations are weak. Not to mention that 4 horde races all have hunchbacks.

I can't put my finger on what exactly is wrong, tho I clearly see it as a whole. Not color.. not the armor either..
What I mean is if I had the model in my hands (or in Maya/3DSMax, for that matter), I would not know how to make it look "WC3ish" and that confuses me a lot (tho I'm no great artist).

Do you believe it's inherently tied to the low polygon nature of these older models ?
I thought it at first, but maybe it's just a part of the look.
Blizzard themselves released HD models based on WC3 recently, for SC2 mods.

They are not perfect but they are way closer to the old style than WoW is. Yet they are high polygon models.

hmm, true true that these models that you link here do look more in the warcraft 3 direction

my opinion that many designers doing is too much domestication
and it ends up with kind of "comic/bland" look, maybe it is intentional and more people prefer it, then i can only speak for my tastes

its certainly not 'low polygons' because the old model could ve been restored to the point using high resolution / polygon/ texture with same part to part ratios and retain all its qualities, i can see it in my head
