[Guide] Dalaran Tome of Knowledge - How to Mage

Was the list up to date during 1.4 patch? I saw some warlock Pre-raid Bis for 1.4 that include Felt Crimson Hat, which gives +30 damage and a bit of int and stam, and there is no reason why a mage would not use it.

This list was never up to date, it included items not in the game and ignored items that were in the game.

The old Pre-Raid list (now removed from the guide) was up to date on server release.

Since I'm not playing anymore the guide now refers to the thread here in the forum which covers the Pre-Raid Gear and BiS:
viewtopic.php?f=44&t=10194

Also added a link for everyone who wants to check the Pre-Raid List, Consumables and Enchants for patch 1.12

Because i don't understand how you calculate 10sp=1%crit
And what about ignite bugs?

Hello There :

Reading the talent tree explanation and comparing it to Vanilla 1.12 Patch (which is nostalrius client) i have seen some differences :

http://web.archive.org/web/200611102300 ... 2497&sid=1

Magic Attunement (2 Talent Points)

You said :

Without the talent dampen magic at its highest rank reduces spell damage by 50 and reduces healing by 100. With the talent it goes to 75 and 150, respectively.

This might be Bug or Glitch because the guy from ® Blizzard Vanilla said :

Slightly less damage taken from enemy spells (~45 damage at max rank).

Improved Counterspell (2 Talent Points)

You forgot to mention that :
Note it can be resisted, however.

Presence of Mind
(3 Talent Points)

You forgot to mention that :
It is, however, dispellable.

Arcane Power (1 Talent Point)

You forgot to mention that :
It is, however, dispellable.

Ignite (5 Talent Points)

You said :

Your critical strikes from fire damage spells cause the target to burn for an additional 40% of your spell's damage over 4 seconds.
It's 40% more damage to your critical strikes, but since a crit is already 50% more damage, in effect this means Ignites adds 110% damage.

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

D: Your crits will now do 210% damage (over time) rather than just 150%.

The damage should be split over 4 seconds otherwise it will be bug or glitch.

Notes: Dispellable.

Improved Scorch (3 Talent Points)

You said :
Stacks up to 3 times.

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

Stacks up to 5 times.
D: Up to 15% extra damage on all Fire spells.

Even Wowwiki confirm :

http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Patch_1.4.0

Can be stacked up to 5 times for a total of 10% increased Fire damage.

If this doesn't stack up to 5 times then it is Nostalrius Bug.

http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Improved_ ... did=796016

Fire Power (5 Talent Points)

You forgot to say that :

This talent applies its multipler to your +dmg gear, which means it scales as your gear gets better.

(it should scale with spell damage) if it doesn't scale then this will be Nostalrius bug

Permafrost (3 Talent Points)

You said :

If you take Improved Blizzard further down in Frost tree, Permafrost may not be worth it since the chill is reapplied each wave.

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

Best used with Improved Blizzard.

Wowwiki says also :

Some spells gain a particular advantage from the increased chill duration. Blizzard, with points in Improved Blizzard normally has a chill of 1.5 seconds, which is increased to 4.5 seconds with Permafrost, three times the duration.

Cone of Cold normally has a chill duration of 8 seconds, which is increased to 11 seconds with Permafrost, making the duration longer than the spell's cooldown of 10 seconds.

The additional reduction to movement speed is an additive amount, meaning that a snare that normally slows by 50% will now slow by 60%.

Piercing Ice (3 Talent Points)

You said :

Increases the damage done by your frost spells by 6%

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

This talent applies its multipler to your +dmg gear, which means it scales as your gear gets better.

Shatter (5 Talent Points)

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

Note that it also works with non-Frost talents. Combine this talent with AoEs and/or +crit talents to obtain near certain crits on frozen targets.

Ice Barrier (1 Talent Point)

The guy from ® Blizzard Forums said :

Notes: It can be dispelled. It gains 10% from any +dmg that affects Frost, thus "Increases damage and healing done by magical spells and effects by up to XX" will affect it.

Also Wowwiki confirms this :

http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Ice_Barrier

Patch 1.11.0 gained the benefit of frost spell damage

This should get increased by Frost Spell Damage , if it doesn't then it is Nostalrius Bug.

That spell resi article implies you can reduce enemy resi to 0 in pvp which is not true.

Hi thanks a lot, very usefull.

Just a question about hit in pvp. This guide tells me 3% hit is needed for facing lvl 60 (pvp) but a lot of people who played on retail told me it is 5% required. One guy even told me there is not incompressible %age of missing in pvp.

So there is 4 options :

- 4% missing (3% hit required, 1% incompressible miss)
- 3% missing (3% hit required)
- 6% missing (5% hit required, 1% incompressible miss)
- 5% missing (5% hit required)

Whose right ? ^^

Should be 4% miss against equal level, 5% against 1 higher, 6% against 2 higher, 17% against 3 higher (= raid bosses), 28% against 4 higher etc etc
But tbh until I specced into shadow my fearbombs would miss about 20-30% of the time. So you'd better get some hit. The server is Nostlike.
