This has some truth to it, but at the same time, for people like myself a competitive attitude is natural. I have a naturally competitive personality and I take great pleasure in any activity that can be turned into or viewed as some kind of competition. So for me, almost all of the enjoyment I get out of ANY video game is rooted in a quest to be better than as many other players as I possibly can.
Whether there is a numerical rating attached to it or not, I simply seek to be the best. This is just how I naturally enjoy the game, by viewing it competitively.
Of course there will always be someone who is better. But what gives me enjoyment and "puts a smile on my face" is constantly playing with the attitude of TRYING to be the best, and knowing that there is always a trick or tactic that you don't know yet, and can improve by learning. A (literally) pro gamer once told me years ago "dont play at your potential, play towards it"
As for all the forum PvP and shit talk and drama, all it does is add emotion and passion to something that is inherently competitive, which IMO makes it all more interesting. And sure I sometimes shitpost myself but it's only motivated by the fact that the responses are consistently entertaining and it spices things up in game.
TL;DR - Everyone "enjoys" the game differently and for some people their enjoyment comes from having a competitive attitude and a drive to be the best or even perceived as the best.
