You're missing a crucial point here.
The issue is not with the amount of players we have, it's with the amount of machines and money that can be spent on the server.

As the server is 100% free and none of the players is not paying a dime for even the bandwidth required, let alone the hosting bill, we are stuck on limited capacity.

If there was a way that the players could help out with the bills then we, the players could upgrade the hardware and bandwidth so that we can have a better experience (not talking about money donations, because Blizzard will shut the server down the moment anything viably resembling donations pops up).

Honestly i've thought of many ways to do this, but it's up to the dev team.

There is a donate link. It's well hidden and they're not pushing it. But if you search you will find a way to donate some money.

You get nothing in return, which I will suspect will put a lot of people off the idea :P but with the sheer number of players it's likely enough will come forward to cover hosting bills and the cost for a second dev server (which was why the donation option was opened in the first place).

The ultimate limit is that pretty much all mangos servers (some people have created versions that support multi node, but I suspect no stable solution yet exists) only run on a single server. Something this size should ideally have 3 servers. 1 for each continent and a dedicated instance/BG server.

Hence donations will help keep dev and test realms on separate boxes and means the performance won't be impacted by such functions. But, there's still a hard limit of activity at which the performance will drop.
