Nostalrius goes one step forward

by Syrah » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:39 pm

Dear Community,

Last week, a question was asked to the private server community regarding the possibility of opening a PvE vanilla server on Nostalrius. The goal for us when players connected was to examine how many people might be interested in this sort of opportunity, where they came from, the impact on the existing PvP server, etc.

This is an extensive announcement regarding many things, so fasten your seat belt!

Summary:

    1. Feedback from PvE server test;
    2. Major technology breakthrough on the PvP server;
    3. What's next;
    3.1 Internal structural changes;
    3.2 New website;
    3.3 Cross-realm battlegrounds;
    3.4 Realm opening date.

1. Feedback from PvE server test.

From the data we gathered during the session, ~2,500 distinct players logged in during the brief 40 minutes:
* 67% of the population were new players who had never played on our server before,
* Among the remaining ~33%, half of them were old players who stopped playing on the PvP server.

Our team's main motivation remains intact: allow people to relive the old vanilla days, the golden age of World of Warcraft; one of the most appreciated and popular games ever created in the history of video games.

Statistics clearly state that there is a need for a PvE server, which would gather players from all around the world. When compared with the Nostalrius Begins pre-launch data, note that we "only" had 1,200 distinct players that played on our PTR before the official release.

Nostalrius will release a fresh vanilla PvE realm to fulfill the needs of these players.

This second realm will benefit from all the upgrades applied on the current PvP server since its release, including general fixes, bug abuse fixes, anti-cheat features, and other automated systems making players' experience as delightful as possible while protected by mature and efficient-proved algorithms against exploiters. This server population will be limited to 2,500 players with a queue; it will be the same limitation as official retail servers back in 2006.

Regarding content release, it will follow the same timeline as the PvP server. Character transfers from the PvP realm will never be possible. As a consequence, players will be able to relive a new fresh server start: a rare and tremendous moment for everyone ;)

2. Major technological breakthrough on the PvP server.

As you may have already noticed, the server lag has been drastically reduced this week! We now have more than 7.5k online players without lag.

During the last week, the development team started to progressively apply a new technology to the Nostalrius PvP realm that had never been applied before to any private server to our knowledge. This solution should deal with the server lag that players are experiencing when we have more than 7k players online, especially on continents. A second goal is to increase the visibility distance, even during high load peaks.
The proof-of-concept initial tests made on our testing realms produced an outstanding result, and we applied a first stable version earlier this week that reduced the server lag by more than 50%! A second version has been applied this weekend and allowed us to increase the visibility distance without affecting server performance. New versions are scheduled to be applied next week with the data we are gathering right now while you are playing.

3. What's next

3.1 Internal structural changes

Having a second server to maintain will require some structural changes inside the staff.
The GM team will have to handle the 70,000+ active accounts from the PvP realm plus the accounts from the new PvE realm. 3 up to 5 additional GMs will be needed for this change, check this link if you think you're impartial, patient, positive and mature enough for this difficult task. Training sessions and new tools are being developed to help them handle two servers at the same time. An update of our Terms of Use will also be published soon to clarify some aspects, and help players understand their rights and duties.

The IsVV team is also actively recruiting to be able to deal with the new bug reports.

3.2 New website

These structural changes require us to get a new website: and it's currently under development!
It will include new cool features, more visibility about how things are moving, an easier way to find pertinent information, etc. This task comes under the responsibility of the communication team.

Don't forget that the Communication Team is still looking for a video creator: want to help us? have the experience? Please contact us!

3.3 Cross-realm battlegrounds

We won't go much into detail here, but cross-realm battlegrounds are a very complicated topic.
The concept has been precised and specified before this summer by the Development Team with the following conclusion: it is a very difficult challenge to achieve and there is, for now, no guarantee that it will happen as it needs a lot of software development. The content release shift between the PvE & PvP realms gives us several months to prepare a final answer.

3.4 Release date of this new realm

We don't have any release date to provide yet; an announcement will be made in a few weeks.
Help us find a good video creator to make the things move faster.

Once again, thank you so much for your support!

Best regards,
Nostalrius.

Best decision ever.

And I like that you take your time to prepare for the launch properly and are not rushing things.

Keep up the great work!
