If you're after not being blatantly OP just play a feral druid. It's kind of viable and pretty fun, long fights etc.

Personally I prefer playing hybrids in Vanilla / BC because I felt their playstyle was much more unique back then, even though they were not the best in any roles (except maybe specific PvP scenarios such as resto dr00ds for WSG FC) - it's a much more creative approach to the combat and pvp, I feel. At least for Paladins and Druids. Shamans just roll that 20% dice and hope to win or lose based off that. But the RNG is what makes it fun.
