Theorycraft: Tank Armor & EH (Effective Health)

by JCarrill0 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 12:23 pm

Now before you go and think this is yet another Paladin vs Warrior tanking thread, please give this a read.
(or at least a skim for those who think it's TL;DR)

While looking things over between Tank roles between Warriors & Paladins, I remember that Druids in Vanilla could come close to Armor Capping when maxing out Raids buffs.

So my question is theoretically, what is the highest Armor, EH, (possibly Avoidance?) can a tank get at it's highest peak?

Armor Damage Reduction Formula

According to Blizzard UI elements, the formulas for Damage Reduction are as follows for WoW 2.0.8

Levels 1 - 59 DR% = Armor / (Armor+400+85*Level)

Levels 60+ DR% = Armor / (Armor+400+85*(Level+4.5*(Level-59)))

I am not sure if applies accurately for 1.12.x

I did read a thread here on Nost about "Armor and Damage Reduction Calculations" which I found to be useful.

mindbullets wrote: The Armor cap is widely reported to be 75% damage reduction (I have no confirmation of this, only old forum posts). Against a level 63 mob (i.e. a raid boss) this gives an Armor cap of 20708. However, given limited data about how the damage reduction scales with enemy level, it is still difficult to say for certain if this formula works for enemy level 63. Use at your own risk.

I think based on some research this should be the more accurate cap:
Armor / (Armor - 22167.5 + 467.5 * MobLevel) for levels 60+

So according to the equation (if its correct) would be:

21855 / (21855 - 22167.5 + 467.5 * 63) = 75% reduction

21855 is the armor cap.

so with that being said, I was wanting to know, theoretically what do you think the highest armor we can get unbuffed, and then of course... fully raid buffed!

Code: Select all
Paladin BiS
Health: 5401
Armor: 10889 (9916+973)
       60 - 66.4%
Defense: 440
Crit:  12.08%
Block: 23.32% (06% equipped)
Dodge: 16.12% (04% equipped)
Parry: 17.32% (02% equipped)
+Hit:  05.00% (02% equipped)

Warrior BiS
Health: 6939 (7285 with Endurance)
Armor: 10781
       60 - 66.2%
Defense: 445
Crit:  11.64%
Block: 34.52% (19% equipped)
Dodge: 17.72% (08% equipped)
Parry: 15.52%
+Hit:  09.00%

This was done using the BiS for each class (sorry I didn't add Druids yet since I don't know their BiS).
Paladin did have Devo Aura on (because of the Libram), but other then that everything else was unbuffed, I didn't calculate fully raid buffed, and left that for you guys to openly discuss

Hey jcarillo

The Formular for vanilla is:

Armor / ( Armor + 400 + 85*lvl )

If i remember correct cap for lvl 63/bosses something around 17k.

I heard of tanks (both warrior and paladin) getting up to 11k Hp.
Anyone seen higher?

This forumula yields 17265 as 75% reduction. So that would be the cap if correct. My guess would be that it is. The separate formula for 60+ very much looks like a TBC workaround to not make lvl 60 tank gear too good at level 70.

The forumula rewritten to get armor for a lvl and reduction is:

Armor = (400+85*moblevel) * reduction/(1-reduction)

An actual summary on all the stats and how they work would be an excellent resource. Hmmm.

I believe Kungen in Nihilum reached around 12-13k in full t3 gear and world/raid-buffs.

EHP is the amount of damage a player can take before he dies. It does not consider parry, dodge ,block or any other probability that does not have a 100% chance of happening.

So it only calculates with armor, permanent buffs or talents as well as temporariry buffs which can be active whenever a mob is fought (titan flask f.e.) .

Druids tend to have highest EHPvsPhys when geared correctly as they can achieve high amounts of armor. Druids recieve up to 5.06 armor for each point of armor on their gear (only base armor of gear, not entcgants).

Warrior come in second place. This is only due to the fact that defense stace grants a flat 10% dmg decrease otherwise they would be on par with paladins as both wear plate.

Paladins are in third place.

If we talk about EHPvsMagic warriors are best as they have 10% defense stance reduction which both other tanks don't have.

If you want to take parry, dodge etc also into consideration warriors should be Nr 1 with paladins in second and Druids in the last slot. Mainly due to the fact of missing leather tank gear and Druids being disabled to parry or block.

i have been 12k Hp already and lot more armor than your calculations.

MoonDragon (maybe wrong spelled his name) have been 14k Hp with better gear than me .

kind regards Killerduki (protection paladin) .

Also regarding your calculations : Did you calculate dodge gained by Agility ?
The stats for some reason you gave are kinda wrong at BiS gear mention.

can you provide links? Realmplayers would be best if you can

Edit:
http://realmplayers.com/CharacterViewer ... Killerduki
Maybe this one is inaccurate
The other names, Mondragons, only stays a t3 paladin with TF, no HP links (unbuffed)

Mondragons 13k HP

http://oi58.tinypic.com/fa1wdt.jpg

He is not using "twins" finger .
He is not using his "naxx" cloak .
He is not using his "cthun" neck.
He is not using his "sapphiron" trinket

(if you see some of those items on his realmplayers he obtained already) . as screenshot is out of date.

He is not using at least aq40 or naxx shield to increase armor .

Was not able to find his next Screenshot with his 14k HP . If he was here i am sure he would gave that.
