What's the catch?

As a newby on this Nostalrius there is one thing I don't understand: How does Nostalrius generate money? Developing/editing the software, giving support and hosting the server must cost some serious money (especially on the scale of Nostalrius).
So how does this work? Since there is no voting system, no advertisements, no pay-to-win possibility and no donating links on the website. Is there something I'm overseeing? Or is Nostalrius grounded by some nice person that has money to spare and does not want anything in return?

It's been rumored (never seen it confirmed anywhere) that the developers are somewhat wealthy and can afford this themselves.

There is no official communication about this.
The french Nostalrius never needed donations for hosting, because there was an agreement between some devs and another private server: devs would work for them from time to time, and the hosting was paid. I guess this projects still benefits from this agreement. If it comes to a end, then Nostalrius would work with donations.
Whatever happens, there will never be donation rewards. That's one of the first rules in the server policy.

*you did not hear this from me!*

it has been rumored that there is money being made by selling the scepter of the dragon of the black dragonflight "Lord Victor Nefarius"
to some blackmarket rogue dwarves in the dark depths of Undercity.
this scepter (also rumored) contains a red shard that can be used to unleash great powers upon the world!

That's not speculation on my part. That is a rumor I have heard. I shared it while stating that it hasn't been confirmed. I'm not just spouting out random possibilities.

By the way, does anyone know what kind of money per month is required for this kind of server?

you didn't hear this from me but it's been rumoured that Alki David pays for this server and he keeps Zyzz who is still alive hidden away in his mansion to code and develop nostalrius.

ogtrucker=zyzz? coincidence?
