Resto druids are necessary, good ones can carry very well, but the main healer(s) will always be the priests.

Well, generally you do want a priest above all healers for dungeons and after that generally a healer that can resurrect incase of wipe. This however can easily be avoided by grouping with people you know or find better than braindead, do caucious pulls and keep it in a pace that you can manage to heal. Druids are pretty gear dependent, but they're also one of the easiest classes to gear before even entering any dungeons. Plenty BoE gear on the auction house pretty cheap. :)

Restoration druids are very viable. The notion that "druids get good in AQ, before that they suck" is a fallacy, used by bad players to justify poor raid performance.

I recommend reading up on druid itemization. This general guide is also a decent place to start.
