I agree with you. I only make threads when I'm level 55 and some Ranker tries to gank me, and I successfully kill them.

The vanilla ranking system has many problems. Skill being decoupled from rank is just one.

The fancy titles that you get as you rank up would indicate to the unsuspecting person that you are a leader of some sort, captain/chief of the faction in the RP-PvP struggle of the battlegrounds. The reality is, with scant exceptions of people that are always a pleasure to play with (say Grabben in Alliance, R12 last I saw him), the majority of these people are just self-absorbed little cubs, who will only greet the new player with derision, no instructions or cooperation, and limiting all communication to their pre-arranged party.
Of all the Grand Marshals of the last 2 months I played with as I made my way to R11, the only one that ever did something close to leading was Nictrix. And that was 1-liners.
