XP/Loot while grouped?

by itwasfree » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:01 pm

I'm introducing my girlfriend to WoW & the plan was to just party up & do everything together (but presumably have to kill twice as many things), but someone told me that in Vanilla it's terribly inefficient to do quests in a group. They said the quest item drop rates are reduced when partied [not that you have to kill twice as many things, it's more than that] and that the XP is worse than a 50% split.

I was assuming that quest drop rates are the same and that experience is cut in half, so we'd just have to kill twice as many things [around what we'd have to do solo anyway].
Is it worse than that? Should we quest together but just out of party?

If you plan to play on the PvP server: Pretty much all questmobs are contested because of the insanely high population, having to kill twice as many sounds like a pain in the ass for certain quests

XP is split 50/50 and the quest items drop just as frequently. Assuming you can kill mobs twice as fast together it's fine to level in a group, but since most quests are contested by tons of other people (on the PvP server) it will take quite a lot longer for two people to complete some quests.

However since you're just introducing your girlfriend to the game I still think it's wiser to play together, as I assume she'll get pretty bored on her own.

you have a doubled kill speed tho, and also more survivability and less ganks

Thank you for setting the record straight everyone!

And for the record, while I enjoy the PvP server very much (despite hating the population problems), it is absolutely no place for a new player (simply due to the inability to get any quests at all). It's frustrating and zero fun. The PvE server has a much better chance of hooking her.

PvE server is great, go for it.

There's no world pvp but honestly how much "real" world pvp is there on the pvp server? It's all senseless ganking or getting ganked of people > 10 levels above you.

I think a PvP server is a better experience, even for new players. However a 10k+ pop server is a horrific experience, even for experienced players. Fighting over quest mobs/items is incredibly immersion breaking and extremely frustrating.

Plus, there are 5x as many bored 60s running around camping lowbies for absolutely no reason. I don't want her to suffer that.
