Unlike Vanilla, you actually want exactly one Ret Paladin per raid in TBC. Their buffs and refreshing all the Judgments on a boss are valuable.

Also unlike Vanilla they actually get a button to push every few seconds and aren't just auto attacking, so they do passable dps now.

It's not bad, but they're horribly threatcapped. Prot is also a pretty good spec and is favoured on fights like Illidan. Too bad they're jank in Sunwell.

Aren't you required to have a warrior for Illidan for shear? Or can paladins block that with holy shield?

Well, there were fights you needed someone with a shield, because nobody at Blizzard thought that bears could carry a log and block with it.

Shield Block allows a Warrior to hit the avoidance cap, which renders them immune to Shear. Prot Paladins are capable of hitting it raid buffed, which means they don't have to press a button during the cast bar. They're also superior AoE tanks with Thorns effects and Consecrate, but they're squishy against almost anything in Sunwell, which is why they suck past BT.
