I didn't think it was possible to train mobs onto someone on Nos.

Unfortunately I do remember it was possible on live until they changed it.

With the way threat works, mobs won't train on you unless they have an aoe that hits you (demoralizing shout, frost nova, etc), or you have an aoe that hits them.

Nah, if it's it within their "zone of agro" and someone else dies or feigns/vanishes you will pull the agro.
There's a small window after the reset to pick up the mobagro, which any above average player would know how to handle and be able to predict.
